Many years ago when I was time poor due to work commitments I didn't have time to put my Datsun 1600 on a hoist to do routine checks before the next rally and shortly after the 1/2 way point the oil pressure dropped suddenly so stopped the car to discover that the sump plug was missing add ended up wittling a small bit of a tree branch down and screwing it in place and bummed some oil from other competitors and managed to drive 200 klms home.

Sadly the motor was not the best so I removed an1800 KLM old motor from a wrecked 180B to replace the damaged 1600 motor before my next rally.

After this incident I have always x drilled the head of the plug and fitted a safety wire to prevent this happening. I also safety wire the oil filter as well via a hose clamp over the filter to locate the wire.

I realize that this rarely happens these days but I still use this "old school" method.
