What precautions can you take to prevent rusting when a car is in storage?

I presume water, and damp air are the big culprits here. What can be done to reduce the risk of rusting?

if I was laying it up for a long time I'd do the waxoyl treatment for sills, body cavities, inside door panels etc. I'd put inhibitor in the fuel tank and run it right through the fuel system. I'd change the engine oil and filter; mate of mine used to work in an MOD place where they had long term storage engines they fitted silica gel plugs in the cylinder heads but they were 18mm plugs.

I reckon most of the people on this forum would take the cocoon as a given when storing our well-loved cars, I know I use one for the focus when I put it off the road for a couple of months during the winter. only thing is I have to use a Goretex one because of my leaky garage roof :woot:

I've had a Metro in storage for nearly 30 years now, last time I looked, it just had a bit of surface rust on one rear quarter panel.
