It basically means that you don't loose sound into the door it keeps the sound in the cabin.

In a sub application then yes you'd be right.
But for mid and high end you don't want any of the sounds to be lost in the door.
If you use the door speakers as added bass then no I wouldn't imagine they'd work but for mid and high yes they will improve sound as none will be lost in the door.

But aren't car speakers supposed be free air, using the boot space/door cavity to work properly?
