Sat 18th I am going to change the diff fluid in my car. Booked Weedon garage ramp hire so I can do it standing up and with the car level.

It's a relatively simple job, just two bolts, drain and fill. I have all I need - oil, rags, pipe, 14mm hex screw, torque wrench etc.

My question is, what is best to use to help seal the bolts?

I have the following:
PTFE tape.
This stuff: http://old20tractorparts.com/engine-parts/903-heldite-joining-compound-125ml-7100022.html
And this stuff: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/371405317045

What would be the best? To my mind it's more important to seal than to lock but I don't want to risk any compound getting into the diff itself. The bolts I think are grubs, so they don't have a face.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers

The fill and drain plugs are usually slightly tapered so you don't need to use any type of sealant on them. Remember to take your car for a run first so's the oil will run out more easily.

Yes going for a seal is a proper fix. Any other thing can not be that reliable because this thing is made for it properly.
If you see how it all have to work we can get to have ideas that are supportive with it.

Sealant not usually required. Besides, they only work properly if both threads are completely clean of oil. If the thread is tapered then it will self seal. If not, then a copper washer is commonly used to create the seal.
