New to this, please be gentle

Hi and welcome to TC forums.
I've fitted them to previous cars but only for the extra noise. Don't expect any power gains infact you'll probably lose a bit if not fitted in the correct position due to drawing extra heat in from engine bay. Only do it if you want the induction noise or are going big power which would overload the standard system

Greetings and welcome to TC!! Same as Andy says. Don't bother. I'd also avoid the drop in performance panel filters. OEM pleated paper is quite sufficient and at circa £5 a go very cheap. Just replace it when it starts to look a bit grey.

The only benefit with the oiled K&N etc ones is that when dirty they flow slightly better than a dirty paper filter. I also have my doubts about filtration quality.

I do know a good quality ik with a proper cold air feed benefited my bigger engined vec b v6 as it did seem to get breathless at high revs. That said most modern cars these days seem to have decent feeds as standard so for good flow just change the oem paper filter every 5k or 6 mths. For 10 or 15 quid a pop its worth oy.

Cold air feed is helpful but most cars now have pretty good intakes as noted above. Those cone filter things are just noise generators in my estimation.

Hi and welcome.

As above. However, you can't do a lot of damage so it is a good way to start learning about modifying your car. I liken it to what we did when kids - attached a playing card to our bike's frame so it was flicked by the wheel's spokes. Made a great noise but didn't improve performance :)

Had a look yesterday an its already got a k+n panel filter fitted. And it's chipped as well, but one of those things you fit your self, car was like that when I bought it

Personally I'd dispense with both. I am assuming this a the 2.2 Diesel unit. Get a standard panel filter from Mazda or decent 3rd party alternative. Strip out the 'chip'. If you want more power then ECU remap is by far the best way to go about this.

Aye - you can get remaps relatively cheap now. As the lads have said, an IK might or might not make much difference, but it is a good start on modifying. Uprated discs and pads are also a good beginner's job, you get your hands dirty and you feel good after cos you've saved money on a couple of hour's garage labour costs. If you enjoy it, coil springs and shocks are relatively easy too, and usually don't need very specialist tools beyond a spring compressor and sometimes angle-headed spanners to get to the top nut on the strut.

Unless it's a DTUK unit I would take the tuning box out. Proper ECU remaps by Celtic, Avon, Quantum tuners etc are about £200 now and much more reliable for your engine then tuning boxes. DTUK are the only ones I've heard good reports from but they're normally about £400. I have a VWRacing panel filter in my golf just for a little more induction noise.
