The 626 engines would swap in fairly easily. My bet would be the 2.5L V6i for maximum power. Get a donor car from the breakers yard with gearbox and running gear and you have a good project there.
Other possibilities include the following....
B6T - 1.6 turbo DOHC
BPT - 1.8 turbo DOHC
F2/F2T-2.2 / 2.2 turbo SOHC
FE DOHC -2.0 DOHC
FS(ZE) -2.0 DOHC
K8(ZE) -1.8 DOHC V6
KF(ZE)-2.0 DOHC V6
KL(ZE) -2.5 DOHC V6
