I'm 17 in december and I've just bought a 1974 VW Beetle, it needs a new engine and i was thinking of a 1.1 to keep the insurance down and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of which insurance I should get on it and roughly how much it would cost me? I was told it would be cheaper because I can get classic car insurance, thanks, and also if anyone has any suggestions of what would look good on it id be glad to hear from you :)

Hi Ash and welcome to TorqueCars. That's a pretty good first car. Bad news first though, most classic car shemes require the driver to be over 21-25 years old. Try Adrian flux.

With the beetle I don't think engine sizes will make much difference so I would go with the 1300. I'm pretty sure the 1.1 is fairly lifeless due to the weight of the car. Get some quotes for insurance before you start though as you don't want surprises later on.

Also try an insurance broker - they might have a suitable scheme for young drivers with classic cars.

Have you seen our mini site www.torquecars.co.uk/vw/ - Xavier put this together and looks at the classic Beetle range and campervans.

hey and welcome to torquecars mate.

you will qualify for free road tax. you will find it much cheaper third party rather than fully comp. but you wouldnt get anything if you crash it. it depends on the overall condition of the car if its worth a fair bit then its always better to go fully comp.

i had a 1990 prelude valued at £700 phoned for insurance on it and the woman told me it be better just to get TPFT as id only get around £3-400 back if it was written off. fully comp was £550 TPFT 280.

hi thanks for the replys :)
bit worried about the 21-25 thing might have to be insured as a second driver to my dad or something, that way i can get him to pay for insurance ;) lol not too sure about the road tax i thought it was 1972 and before that you didnt have to pay but will find out more about that soon,i've tried adrian flux and they are going to email me a quote (although i did request one before and it never came) thanks for the suggestions i'll have to ring around i think difficult to find the right places on the internet, just wondering if there were any companys which dealt specificly with classic vw's or something

some companies arent to bad with the under 25s its a case of yes but youll get a bigger premium and a compulsory excess as well as a voluntary one.

for example, i just got my renewal this morning so using bells figures,
my voluntary excess is £500. if i was under 21 id have a compulsory excess of £350 as well so if i claimed id be £850. 21-24 £250 ( £750) and over 25 with at least 1 years full license £100 (600). over 25 with less than 1 year on a full licence get grouped with 21-24 year olds.

buy a classic car mag and flick through the back of it where all the insurance companies are. you might find someone in there that specialises in beetles

well i got a quote from adrian flux and its around £2,470 so don't think i'll be going with them hopefully there are cheaper ones than that, i was told that a classic car would be cheaper and am hoping that they are right im not going to start spending any money on it though until i find an insurance quote less than £1200.. the search continues

classic car insurance is tricky, i was pretty excited to get classic car insurance cause it only costs $140 a year here, but the thing is that you have to be fully licenced for atleast 10 yrs. and you also have to have an everyday car that is insured in order to get classic car insurance because you can only put an x amount of kms on your bug per year, the insurance doesnt cover everyday driving. im 28 and couldnt get it because i dont have an everyday car that im insured under. Your best bet would be to get ur dad to register the bug under himself that way he can get classic car insurance
