Hyundai Getz 1.3
Hi, I have recently bought a Hyundai Getz second hand car just 3 weeks ago. Its on a 2004 plate. The problem I am having is I am getting 23.5 miles to the gallon !! It is still under warranty and the garage have been kind of helpful but its not getting me any further forward or getting me more miles out of a tank of fuel. It is an automatic transmission....I think that's how you say it....but wondered if anyone could help me with this or if anyone has come across it before. I guess this is just a stab in the dark as I came across this forum by accident...please help !!

Greetings and welcome to our TorqueCars forum :)

I assume the garage have gone through the basics like giving the car a basic service, checking for fuel leaks etc?

6 days after I bought the car I paid out for new leads, plugs, oil filter, oil, air filter and the stuff you put in the tank to clean the injectors hoping that would put things right...It didn't. The garage had the car in on Monday and put it on the emissions test and said...there is nothing wrong with it. The problem is it has an overdrive switch. Without that on the car will only run in 3 gears !! To used 4th gear you HAVE to have the overdrive button "on". It doesn't seem to be changing gear very well...I am doing 60mph with 7000 revs before it hits 4th gear !!
It has been taken to a gear box specialist who also said nothing is wrong. Today it has had a gearbox oil and filter change....still no difference !! I have plans to go back to the garage tomorrow as this has got to be sorted...I cannot afford to run a car costing me that much in fuel.
I guess maybe I was hoping someone on here would be able to put there finger on as to why this is happening....thank you in advance

Hi and welcome to TC forums.
Just a quick look on Hyundai forums and there are a LOT of Getz owners complaining of poor mpg. It seems to be the case that the engine is just not powerful enough to accelerate the car up to speed, especially in automatic form, so you end up pushing the accelerater harder which uses more fuel. Sorry to say you are going to have to super concentrate on your driving style to get any more mpg out of the little engine i.e smooth acceleration, coast up to junctions and don't brake unless you really have. Take out any unnecessary weight and check tyres are at correct pressures and tracking nice and straight.

I don't want to be negative but old getzs are not that good cars especially autos.

Coincidentally my father had a manual 2oo4 top of the range Getz which my sister and I inherited with very low mileage .

Although it drove ok it wasn't that powerful and it had the bigger engine with a manual box .

Even my sister didn't want it because she thought it was slow , and at the time she had a very old small engined VW polo on its last legs and was actually looking for a newer car.

I drove it round town but and it was ok but if you went on the open road it was pretty gutless so I really can't imagine an auto one especially with the smaller engine

I wonder if it wouldn't be better to buy to cut your losses and get a different car rather than spending money on it . I presume it's from a dealer as you've got a warranty so go back to him first.

I certainly wouldn't spend much money on it - Ten year old Getz ( or similar) are not expensive We could only get £2700 for my fathers nine years ago with. something like 2000 miles on the clock . And that was when it was a lot newer and the top model with the bigger engine and manual box.

most of the points have been covered above but these cars were prone to developing faults with the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor which gave a false signal that the engine was colder than it really was which meant the engine control unit (ECU) would send more fuel through than it needed. they didn't always develop a fault code so it might be worth checking. Also don't use the air conditioning too much, that can be quite a drag on an already underpowered engine.

Hi, thank you all for your points on this pile of rubbish I have purchased. I went back to the garage today and test drove an automatic Vauxhall Corsa....on a 52 plate...took a mechanic with me who has said its worth having. It has only done 39,000 miles and has had one lady owner !! It was up for the same price as the Hyundai but the guy said if I want it its gonna cost me ANOTHER 500 quid.....reluctantly I have agreed and I am taking the Getz back in the morning and picking up the Corsa. I am happy that I have gotten rid of the bain of my life but unhappy that I feel I have been ripped off....but I guess its one of those things where I will live and learn. Thanks again for your input on my query...very much appreciated

Well, you have had the car over 3 weeks and the dealer isn't a charity :) He, just like the rest of us, has to make a living.

Put the £500 down as a learning cost which you will recoup with the better MPG of the Corsa.

Well I don't know what costs the garage may of incurred but they're getting the car back in a much better condition then they sold it in. They will now sell the car for the same if not maybe more money now. Just makes me mad garages don't supply car's fully serviced, you shouldn't be the one having to get oils, plugs and the like changed, it should be done before sale. I couldn't live with myself knowing my car's I've had was leaving me in a poor state for someone else to fix. Your Corsa should be a much better standard of vehicle to own anyway. Happy motoring and glad we may of been of some help with the advice.
