Right here's my problem. I bought my second Ti which is in need of a gearbox. But now I think it may just be the diff?
It selects all gears fine and the clutch feels sweet as well. The problem is that when driving there is a banging noise coming from under the bonnet that I can feel through the gearstick. I tried to drive it the other day and it went to pull of normal but then just stopped dead. I had to reverse it slowly back on my yard. Also when moving the engine moves with every bang. So my question has anyone had a similar problem. And also has anyone got an idea whether this be a gearbox problem or a Diff problem?

if it was the diff you would hear it from the back
normaly the box you hear from your seat and engine from the front so sounds like a engine mount or worse

Why would I hear it from the back? The diff is attached to the gearbox as it's Fwd.
Og it does feel like the engine rocks in neutral but it's not that bad. I'm torn between a diff fault or an engine mount. I really don't think it's a gearbox failure. I might just tow it somewhere and then call the RAC to see if they can give me some free advise.

sorry my bad i was thinking abot a bemmer earlyer

get some one else to sit in the car handbrake on 1st gear and just take it to the biting point and rock the engine you will see and hear if a mount has gone a diff you can fill it locking up normaly quiter going one way to the other

i had my diff go on the trans am in january and you could fill that when you truned right

The other week I went to take it round the block and got down the end of the street, stopped to give way went to pull off and nearly went through the windscreen. It just stopped the car dead. I had to nurse it back in reverse nearly burning the clutch. Every so often it banged and the engine really moved. I could see from the drivers seat cause I reversed it with the bonnet open. I might try and change the engine mounts before I strip this one of it's gearbox. I was talking to a Rover enthusiast the other day though and he pointed me in the direction of the diff. So at this minute i'm unsure. I'll have to do more investigating.

tn69: i had the same prob before on a mk4 escort which turned out to be a very worn engine mount as per og's suggestion. It wasnt cracked just the rubber mount had almost disintergrated enabling the engine to move a huge amount,

Forgot to mention that when it sopped me dead it wouldn't even push forwards in Nuetral. It would only go backwards?

Sounds like a drive chain failure to me, mounts would give nocking, vibration etc etc but would never lock the wheels up.
Get the front end off the ground and give the wheels a spin by hand and under power to see what they do.

I'm considering getting the RAC to come out an tow it to my mums and to see if they can give me a little free advice.

go for it its free afterall, the only problem is they may be a little vague, even wrong with the diagnosis....

It may just give me a better idea of the problem. Like I say anyway i'm still undecided. Been busy today stripping the Red one so the silver one can wait a bit.

Any news on this TN?

I've started stripping the red one. It's ready now for the gearbox to come out. I'm abit stuck at the min as I need a second pair of hands which I haven't got so it's on hold for the minute. I also still need to think of a way to get the silver one to my mum's. I think i'm gonna see if the RAC will tow it for me.
