hi

i am trying to buy a Vr4 and when i get it i would like to get asmuch HP gains as possible for as little as possible. i would like to get it up to 360-380bhp. what can these vr4s put out without changing anything. i knoe the evos put out the same bhp standard but the vr4 is twin turbo with 2.5 engine. surly they can be just re-mapped??no??
also i already have a 2.0 galant i would like to know also what gaIN i can get from a re-map on that car to see if it is worth it??
thanks for your help.

Hi Deanh23 welcome to torquecars nice to have you along. The VR4 is a fantastic car. The problem is it is quite rare. A remap would yield significant benefits but the large engines do not tend to rev as high as the 2.0 flat fours so the gains are not as much. When upping the power to these levels I would recommend some bottom end engine work as well - stronger pistons etc...

Norris Designs may be your first port of call they are EVO specialists but I'm sure they will be able to at least point you in the right direction. I will do some research and ask around and see what we can find out for you here.

vr4

Hi

thanks for the info any more would be brilliant. i am gonna purchase one i like the styling and they are rare i like that about them. if i could get one the looks like the one i have at the moment would be fantasic. just a re-map what sort of power gains would it yield over the standard 280bhp. what would it get me up to??
thanks for your help.

thanks mate all this information is very good. how much money would a good re-map and a good boost controller set me back?? do you know of any vr4s that have been re-mapped and what total hp gain would i get from these to modification. i think that i will get these too mods for the car??

Galants in general are ignored by tuners over here because few people realise how good they are! Evo specialists can usually get induction kits, exhaust parts etc. but if you want to do anything with the ECU you are better off going for one of these piggyback chips. These work with your cars existing ECU. Most reputable ones are mapped to your car on a rolling road so they will make the best of any other mods you have carried out. Unichip are probably the most well known.
As far as boost controllers and stuff like that go, if you are going for a re-map wait until then before you fit it. That way you can have it set up at the same time. If you just stick a boost controller on you risk toasting the turbo!

Well hows it going? i have a vr4 that i hane just bought so i am keen to see what other people have tried, parts seem to be the biggest issue as im having issues with my trc vent sollenoid and the staff at mitsubushi are less than helpful as its an import

We have made different manifolds and fitted 15g tubs to a couple of VR4's. With uprated injectors, correct fuel and boost control etc they can be a very fast motor.
Yes, piggy back control is simple and cheap[ish] to fit but best control is via stand alone management. It all depends on how much you want from your car and how deep your pockets are. Modifying cars that actually have a good powerbase can be quite expensive as there's an endless list of things which can add gains.
Before doing anything at all, ensure the engine is good, has good compression and is FULLY serviced, or you will just destroy anything which is less than good.
For a basic start, a good boost controller can add lots of fun, A'pexi AVCR is one of the best controllable units out there for a piggy back system and works very well on these motors.

Where abouts are you Denise? Try Norris designs for parts, they are quite helpful.

Im in northern ireland. will go have a look at the norris designs website now. When i bought my vr4 it was fitted with some nasty cheap tyres on the standard enkei wheels and they had warped, passing a vibration up throught the steering wheel. I have since put some khumo tyres on and the vibration has stopped, but the trc light keeps coming on followed by the engine management light. This happened a lot more often before the tyres were changed though its still happening intermittently. I have followed the fault code guide, (thanks) and have found it to be the traction control solenoid, though the mitsubushi service guys dont know what this is, and want me to pay for an hours labour to put it on their diagnostic machine ( yep they said 1 hour!!) and then order the part the computer suggested.

We've got quite a few on here from Ireland - it looks like tuning is really taking off over there;).

Why do people put such cheap tyres on cars! Especially on a VR4!

You'll have to post us up some pics of your car when you get to 10 posts.

Crazy but they have you over a barrel. Do all of the tyres have the same tread depth? Are they all in alignment? Silly things like that can sometimes upset the traction control.

yep all new kumo tyres all round, all checked and aligned. the light rarely comes on now but when it does it turns off the trc!

there seems to be a tuning scene in ireland, but as with everywhere its hard to avoid the cowboys

Thanks for the heads up, point noted and I won't be recommending them to future Legnum owners.

There are cowboys everywhere. They fall into two camps, the "over optimistic know nothings" and the "couldn't care less rip off merchants!"

hi denise, im in South Africa and as far i know the only vr4 owner around here.
this car is brilliant and like u heard earlier some good tyres for it is a total requirement.
Wayne i want to ask you question though. which unichip model would be compatible with my 99 galant vr4?

its nice to see other people looking for mods. its to the point that I am having to look through the japanese cusco catalogs to find suspension components for my galant in the US. but I like the rarity of the galant. I can't wait til I can post pics

hey man....i want o buy a galant too..maybe i can learn a few things from you... planing to upload the pictures the dealer sent me....at least there's two of us now...lol.....its good to be back

yea, its a good car. I think hte only problems people have with them are relatively small like power window motors going out, a tick from using low grade oil, and the damn gas door flipping open cause its only held by a plastic bar that warps after a while. But, I wish i was lucky enough to be able to get the vr-4

I have the base model us galant but I sourced a 08 lancer evo turbo for only 250.00 USD. so I think its a good pick up cause the 4b11 has a 9:1 compression ratio and so do the 2000 galants, still a ways to go but glad I saved at least 700.00 on the turbo

Yeah...will watch out for those! I cant wait to drive the thing...i've uploaded some pictures the dealer sent me

hey ryan, im waiing or mine...in in windhoek..where in SA are you? do you have a cone filter or standard air box on it?

hey buddi, howzit?
the vr4 i a really stunning and awesome car. im having mine for 2 years now. live in Pretoria. i plan 2 drive it till it falls apart.the other day i raced a m3 with nitros...well it beated me but nt that bad. mine now is almost stock.
hope to hear frm u soon so we can get the vr4 heart beat pumping man...

Re: vr4

hey buddi hwzit.im the only vr4 owner in Africa, well as far as i know. i fitted a mines ECU with a g-reddy boost control and the car is giving me a brilliant 320hp.
its a good car indeed, ipromise u. i chased a m3 with notros the other day.
