Which cars have you come across that actually turn out to be much faster than people think? A lot of these would make great sleeper cars.

I think most high power Estate cars are usually dismissed as being a bit slow, till you realise it's a T4, S4 or Altea.

Then there are lots of small cars that turn out to be pretty nippy. The Turbo Colt CZT, Starlett turbo etc..

So what cars have you come across that could pass as good sleepers?

Not a production car but I keep seeing a small van going round near me and it's rapid.:amazed::eek:
Think it's a small citroen van but no idea what engine it's got, all I know is it's Fast.

A few years back round our way there was an Escort van that had the full Escort Cosworth running gear and engine fitted. Now that was fast!

There's quite a few of those conversions now. There used to be one a few miles from mine but I haven't seen it in a long time.
My mate used to have a Metro pickup with an Mg turbo engine fitted. Was hairy on the handling but fast.
I know of an Escort Cab too having a Focus St transplant.

I've suprised loads of peeps with my GSi estate. Can't wait to get the 3.0 or 3.2 transplant done, will suprise a few more hehe.

Trust me on this! There is nothing faster than Her Indoors in her Focus Vert when a shoe sale has been announced at Jimmy Choos

Ha ha sorry!
You see, what I did there was put the wrong link up!

Here's the right one!

Just watched this! you have got to be kidding? :amazed: I will treat with more respect Mr White Van Man from now on :embarrest: and if he ask's to have a little race for log books, i'm on the way home to eat a huge slice of humble pie :)

the old astra gsi are very fasy, they just look like a boy racer has kitted up a standard one till it goes flying past

I don't know about that, I am yet to see any one go past me! :amuse::toung:

The old Astras were nice. Getting old now, you don't see to many nice ones about now days

Dont be surprised if 1 ever does. there are lots around with turbo engines running 400+ bhp;)

That was brilliant when that Van was on TG. Bloody fast. I remember seeing one about 6 years ago at santa pod with a 450bhp cosworth engine in it, but it was done out to be a racer and was the Blue and White cosworth colours, went like stink.

A lot of the newer 170bhp plus diesels feel a lot quicker than the stats would indicate, probably due to the earth rotating swell of torque they offer.

broke down junker Civics. Some are just junkers with bad exhausts but some have been tuned and pieced together on the cheap and are really bad ass little race cars. the owner has no extra money for paint or a decent interior, slaps a straight pipe on for cheap and does an intake, header and maybe a turbo and ends up with a terrible looking lightweight go kart that MOVES.

Last weekend I test drove a volvo v70r and all I can say is it would definitely surprise a lot of people!

The Volvo autos can be quite thirsty. Not sure why because BMW's torque converter autos are fairly gentle in terms of their impact upon fuel economy.

got to add the Nissan Stagea as a serious contender for best stock sleeper

looks like a barge goes like a skyline

And if you mod it .....................................

The R36 Passat was defiantly a decent sleeper... most didn't know what it was and thought it was just any normal Passat. With Launch Control on the DSG and short gearing though with the Engine and Gearbox tune it was managing 4.7/sec to 60 and 13.21/sec 1/4 mile at its best results (low fuel) which is hardly slow for a largish saloon car with *only* 300hp.

Another of my sleepers was the W8 Passat. This looked even less sporty than the R36, and whilst it wasn't mega quick to 60 MPH being heavy and tall geared... it did just keep on pulling and pulling.

To be fair, most fast VAG stuff is pretty understated. Most people don't even notice the RS6. A friend of mine who's seen the car 2-3 times a week for years only realised what it was a couple of weeks back!

i dont know how do you feel about wauxhals here opel the first vectra in England cavalier was made as 2,0turbo 4x4 and they are easy to tune up from factory 204bhp but as a standard they are quite fast for 20+ year car and from outside they look as standard cavalier vectra till it blows you off on highway

The Opel Senator 3.0i 24v was a real stormer, it was up against the Sierra Cosworths but looked larger and heavier. Still a quick car considering it's size and age!

jup thats sleeper for me . there is few alive in mine country and still proving to jungsters that spoilers dont ad bhp. he he he

The Dodge Neon is a sleeper car that is very moddable. My brother-in-law has a Neon 2.4L that he slapped a big turbo on, bolted the head and did a few other things to and it goes like a bat out of hell. It has some crazy pull, but on the outside (as long as it's not running- it is VERY loud with the straight pipe coming out of the side of the car) it doesn't look like much.
