on start up i get clouds of white smoke and i am only getting 10mpg. any ideas? and are they linked maybe

Hi and welcome to the site.

White smoke usually indicates water is getting into the combustion chamber due to (hopefully only) a damaged head gasket. This can also cause the loss of power resulting in heavier fuel consumpion.

Is it smoke or just water vapour? all cars will emit water vapour during engine warmup and it's especially noticeable in the cold.

Are you doing loads of short journeys - this could well account for the poor fuel economy.

Is the coolant level dropping as well?

Had this happen on my 2.8 capri on one side,it was a crack between the valves on one of the heads !
