i have got a universal 4inch back box and no centre silencer. my car pops really loud if i rant it to 40 and then slow down and it pops from 35 to 30. my thought is because i now have a black mark on my bumper is that flames?? does anyone have any pics of a car that pops flames so i can c wot their bumper looks like please. also theres a normal ish deep tone popping and then i also get i high pitch slapy sound pop. and ideas wud be great

thanks

josh

It's unlikely to be throwing out flames. Sounds as if your car is running very very rich. Air filter and MAF sensor are first places to look.

well i dont think i hav a maf . and i have a standard filter. and i know it isnt running rich . so can u explain any other reasons for blasck patch plz

I would bet it's more likely to do with the ignition system, when was the last time you replaced the dizzy cap, plugs and leads?

(yes those engines have a dizzy)

It will have a MAF. I didn't mean whether the air filter was stock or otherwise. My query is whether it's clean or clogged and in need of replcement.

What evidence are you using to support your conviction that it's not running rich?

I cannot offer any other explanations, I'm afraid.

The flames theory is yours - therefore, you prove it. Is it actually chucking out flames?

{erhaps get someone else to drive it whilst you follow then and have a look to see what's actually happening.

How long ago did the sooty deposits start to appear?

This should be fairly easy to diagnose.

Keep us up to date - good luck, kind rgds,

P.

Intermittent flames from the exhaust mean that you have a cylinder that is not firing occasionally, resulting in a temporary rich condition in your exhaust , which then ignites.
Check your HT leads, plugs-in fact check the entire ignition system ASP , or else you may find your exhaust system on the road after an explosion!

It's not really something to be worried about. My Primera started doing this when I removed the cat. If you had a cat then it's something to worry about but seeing as you haven't you should be fine.
New plugs and leads will help it though.

rite well i think its not rich cos its not very petrolly and it doesnt seem rich, i have no idea of where the maf is on my car. the last time it was alll checked was about a month ago but i didnt get told to change or replce anything. and i still hav a cat on my car. its only had ther blk mark on bumper since ive removed the centre silencer . but the popping doesnt sound normal to me. im ok with popping and ive always had the popping since i changed to the 4inch jap can but ive not always had the slappy popping sound which is y i think i have flames and thats my only thought. it doesnt bother me if i do . its just i wanna know lol. also if im driving along and theres a car behind me . soon as it pops they hang back . which is y im thinking i have flames. but as i say im not sure. lets put it this way um my mate can here the popping about 7-8 houses away from his . and he says that the popping is louder than the exhaust note which i find hilarious . well im hoping to be getting sum 1 to drive behind me soon and then i will find out and let you guys know. being that i have an auto doesnt change any of your thoughts does it? cos i drive auto

am with waynne just normal soot
as you have a silly sized back box (i hate them) there is no real back pressure to push all the flumes /soot out the back there for it will hang about a touch and go over your bumper

i see it all the time if cars have the same type of box on the back

if you dont want the soot but the standard boxes back on

and the pooping sound will be cos the back box and middle box and echo's in the exhaust

i had this issue on a escort before heavy popping/banging slapping under deceleration - was fun for a while driving through the town centre but did get a bit tedious after some time. The black marks are just soot (and not the easiest to get off if you are a bit tardy at washing the car). was running a straight through ashley system with no boxes and a large tailpipe.

Tell me if I am wrong, but black soot, either on the inside of the exhaust pipe or in the gas flow leaving the pipe, indicates an over rich mixture to me.
