Have you ever locked your keys inside the car?

A friend of mine has a Golf with faulty door sensors, so the ECU doens't think anyone has got in and autolocks the doors after a short time. He opened his car, got in, keys in the ignition, then stepped out for a moment and the doors autolocked!

He had to call his girlfriend up to get a taxi and come with the spare key.

It's never happened to me. I did lock them in the boot but the doors were open so it was easily retrieved thankfully.

never done it but the wife managed it with her old metro.
if you opened the door and kept the handle in the open posistion you could lock the door before shutting it.
she stopped this after leaving the keys in the ignition :D

I don't recall ever doing it but the wife has locked her keys in the boot of the MGF. Thing is you can only get into the boot using the key due it being a convertable. One of my girls also locked her keys in her Pug 106, didn't take me long to retrieve them :blink1:

No never done this either, but thanks for reminding me as the battery in my spare set of keys is flat :)

Not the end of the world. If you look closely at the door handle, on most cars there is a small hole. If you insert your key into this and turn, the door should, as if by magic, become unlocked and you can retrieve your good set :)

Some deadlocking systems won't allow this

My Nissan was exactly the same. Lock with the remote and you HAVE to unlock with the remote.

It's hard to do this with the BMW though, unless you open the boot with the remote when the car is locked. You can then put the key down in the boot, close it and then you're stuck. Fine if the spare set is at hand - otherwise you're stuck. They've covered most other silly eventualities though - you can't even remove the key from the ignition without engaging Park.

Hi.I used to lock my keys in the car when i had a mrk 1 fiesta many moons ago. Was ok though because my mates mrk 2 escort keys used to fit better than mine and with a bit of jingeling would even start it. you could also use a metal coat hanger and hook the thin metal bar which is between the handle and the catch and pull upwards,Hey PrestO,but you're not able to do that on modern cars.lost 1 of the 2 keys that i've got for my tigra the other day n had 2 spend £25 on another spare to be cut. Then about a week later a found the one i lost at the botton of my work tool bag lol

The old 'interchangeable' Ford keys :) My mate had a knackered MkII Escort (going back over 26 years now) and it was old then. You could open that with a bit of garden wire. But it was hardly worth locking anyway - by far and away the worst car I've ever driven.

What he said.

My spare key is useless if I hit my main keys button twice as it deadlocks and only the button will open it.
Got two keys but only one of them has button for the central locking.

And this is sold to us as progress ?

Unusual, yes, and becoming more common.

Nissan's 2003 Micra had this arrangement as well and therefore it's impossible to lock your key in the car.

My wife's micra also had this but 1 thing that always confused me was inside her fob there was a cut key. And I never key hole anywhere on her car!

I had an old S10 blazer and whenever I locked my keys in I could use a coin to turn the lock lol. After driving my new car off the lot I went right to my brothers house to show him and locked my keys in the car. Luckily my hatch wasn't locked.
