engine noise

Hi I recently purchased a 2005 x type 2 ltr diesel with 114000k but full service history. It handles fantastic and is reasonably quiet on the motorway but when standing beside it with the engine running it sounds like a truck. Any suggestions on how to quieten it down would be appreciated.
