engine compartment seal

It stops the oil and bits flying out the back should the engine suffer a catestrophic failure. In front engined cars it is IMO essential as this will all go straight to the front screen. In a RWD beetle I'm honestly not sure if it is vital or not?

It might even keep the rain and damp out. Which seal is it? The top of the engine bay, around the opener or to the sides of the engine in the bay itself?

i have found out to my cost that the seal stops the lid from damageing the paint work on the rear shell just like the boot lid one other thing the tin ware around the engine is vital to stop over heating that i allso found out

happy motoring

engine bay seal is ment to stop the warm air entering the cold air thats on top of engine but saying that big engines u got to cut off the seal table on the side of engine

it is essential to keep the hot side and the not so hot side of the engine apart...VW didn't put it there because they thought it looked nice.
