It is worth pointing out that cars do not like short journeys and you'll pay more in the long run for those short trips than you would on a motorway run of some distance.

I tend to take the train more as the station is literally 1 minute walk from my client. I do drive in if I have to carry equipment as attempting to carry that through the station would be ill-advised.
When public transport is reliable, and efficient it does make more sense unless as you say you are carrying equipment.
