I thought it was time we have a definitive drag racing thread about building a street legal drag car.

What cars/engine combinations work the best?

Which fuel/Tyres/Suspension set up work well?

Aerodynamics, Gearing, weight reduction and clutch selection are also important so mention areas and tips that cover these areas.

The Nissan Skylines seem to have a lot of popularity on the drag strip as do Supras, and large V8 American muscle cars like the Mustang etc...

Would you go supercharged or turbocharged for a drag racer?

hello wayne how ya doing,i dont know a lot about drag racing ,would a super charger be better than a turbo as in the lag,or does a super charger lag as well?.I do think that a big v8 is the way to go,the sound would be awesom.

hi im building myself a drag car now.
Im trying to do it on a budget to prove that it is a cheap motor sport and you dont need mega money to get sub 12 seconds.

I have a mk3 Capri as a base. I already owned the car, but it failed an MOT and thought I would see how long she lasted on the track. I built a fast road pinto for her and she was the fastest pinto capri on the 1/4 mile in europe, then I dropped a piston.!

Which is how I thought id go all out next time and buy a V8.

I sold all the interior and engine to supply the v8, which was a 302 windsor ford v8. this came to £950, I got lucky and it came out of a capri so was ready to bolt in. Including gearbox, propshaft and spares.

Im have stripped the engine back and cleaned, polished and checked for cracks etc.... I want to build her to a 450-500 bhp, however I want to do this over time as funds allow.
So im currently putting her back together ready for the classic ford show 2012 at Santa Pod.

My plan to get this power is; racing cams, bigger carb, 100-150 bhp nos, porting and polishing. All the goodies, i.e msd ignition, leads etc...

I have very little engine building experience and probably dont have enough knowledge to pull it off!! Just want to prove that this can be done for less than £2000. I will be trying to go for used parts where possible i.e nos, ignition, carb etc... and saving money by doing a majority of the work myself.

Ill keep the site updated with how I get along and ask for advice when I need it!

Ive been drag racing for 4 years now, so can answer some questions related to the subject and have some friends with over 40 years experience so sure one of us would know!

Greetings pccapri and Welcome to our TorqueCars Forum my Friend!
Good to have you along with us :)

We do have a drag racing oficionado here on TorqueCars who goes by the name of: Old-Git. OG is currently building a drag car also and has a project thread running:

Part one - http://www.torquecars.com/forums/f111/last-i-have-started-my-car-2454/index8.html

Part two: http://www.torquecars.com/forums/f8/last-i-have-started-my-car-part-2-a-7440/

take a look at it for some inspiration! I am sure the two of you will have much in common with your related sport. :)

That car looks absolutely mental! I think that will be a bit out of my league! Would be good to get the two together at the track and see the difference, as mine will be solely for racing and those that aren't tend to be slower.

The audi rs4's are quick on the road but being 4wd they have a slow start on the line. That said they would pick up speed quickly with the turbo.

i wasnt talking about rs4's but 5 pot turbo audis of old, rs4's are not turbocharged, and 4wd off the line is best mate
