When buying a car which would you go for?

A cheap fixer upper that needs some work doing or a more expensive keeper where the car has been well maintained and kept requiring little extra money to be spent?

I'm always amazed at people who buy rubbish because it is cheap, then they spend their life savings trying to keep it on the roads, don't people realize they would save in the long run buy buying a better looked after car to start with.

Is there a mid way ground here, what are your personal preferences?

If I had time I'd get a project I can sort and fettle how I want but it nearly always costs more than I thought it would so with the benefit of experience I'd probably just buy something sorted and nice and then add a few choice upgrades to it.
