Brakes question.

What brake pads and discs do you use? Have you uprated them or do you choose things that go on to the standard system?

I didn't mean to ignore your question billyo - I just got a little side tracked.

I would stick to standard fit parts and go with braided hoses, greenstuff or red-dot performace pads and switch to vented and grooved disks.

If you are a serious track day driver its worth spending a little more on bigger disks and upgrading to a more powerful caliper.

Billyo,

I've just brought updated discs and green stuff pads all round.
Try www.crn-uk.com their on Ebay also. £300 for Zinced plated front vented/grooved and rear solid grooved discs, all the pads and braided hoses, postage £300. Stupid money.

An Mg specialist I know uses his mg zs for track days and has standard discs and EBC Race Pads but he said after a hard track day the pads are noisy around town.

Depends what you're upto with your motor mate!?

I've tried green stuff in my Nissan Primera and they were very good indeed.

Not so sure in the Pug 406 though - the heavy front end (diesel) seems to much for 'em when you're hammering between Milton Keynes roundabouts. They work well initially, but too many 30-100, brake to 30, and the back to 100 before the next roundabout puts a strain on 'em.

I've now got the ATE discs and pads which is the factory setup and they're better, although wear is rapid. Maybe change the driving habits ;)

Grooved or slotted,

Discs are superior to drilled or drilled and slotted discs for durability and stopping power.

Ferodo DS2500 for serious use, or their TS2000 brake pads are some of the best available.

I have standard OEM ones atm. When I upgrade I will be losing the rear drums and swapping them for discs. The new set up will come from an EP3.

i have Kevlar and Ceramic.
front and rear on mine stops like anything hot or cold never have and brake fade ect think it has std discs on looks like it i have not touched them its how i got it

I use Ferrodo DS300 on the rally car, got to get them warmed up to get the best from them, not advisable for road use.

I'm not sure that slotted of drilled (even blind drilled) discs are necessarily more durable unless they've been produced to an exceptionally high standard and re-tempered after cutting and drilling. The drilling and cutting process creates local hotspots which can change the behaviour of the disc as it heats up during use. Heat tempering, (often cryogenic cooling is used as well) can really increase the resilience of a brake rotor.

The only thing keeping me from fitting slotted discs (apart from the fact I don't really need them on the road) is the noise that some can create and the fact that they nearly always do decrease pad life. Other than that I'd be at thr front of the queue.

I've tried quite a few different makes.

I need brakes that can work from 200+kph along with good brake pads. I don't care if the pad life is shortened I'll take that over mine being shortened. Small price to pay for piece of mind.

I get no noise at all from the handed, slotted discs I use.
If they (slotted discs) are good enough for the 650hp V8 Supercars (Australian Touring Cars) I reckon they'll do for me and what I need.
Going cheap on tyres & brakes can be a bit like saying you really don't value your life too much.

I'm not disagreeing with you. All I've said is that I'm quite happy with the braking performance my car exhibits with the OEM pads and discs. If they weren't up to the job then I'd be looking to upgrade them with an alternative aftermarket set of products.
