Are plasma spark plugs any good

I'm reading a lot about plasma spark plugs, where instead of a small spark a large plasma arc is formed.

Are these just a gimmick, do they work? Will the engine be more efficient or powerful as a result of fitting one of these?

Does plug choice make much difference to your cars performance?
 
Plugs do vary in performance and longevity. Plasma systems must require very different voltage step-up electronics compared to standard ignition systems. Just replacing plugs won't achieve this.
