The timing chain or drive sprocket has gone, am i likely to find damage to valves etc, would i be better to buy a second hand engine, any comments welcome, thanks.

Hello and welcome to the site mate

unfortunately your not going to know the damage until you open it up. you might have been lucky if its cut out quick enough

Hey matey welcome to T.C, yea like P.G said, you'll have to open up, seldom one is lucky with no damage but it does happen, snapped a cam belt once on a Honda I had, had about 5 bent valves, bought new ones tackled the grinding paste, put it together again, and the engine sadly outlasted the body, lol. Best of luck to ya buddy.

Just pop the head off and inspect, if the engine is OK you won't have much trouble putting it back on but if it was wrecked you'd see the extent of the damage and decide if you need a new head, full engine etc...

There were a few engines around from breakers yards when I was looking around last month so you should find something suitable.
