Porsche 944 turbo
Hi Guys, new to this forum and first post for advice. I have a 1987 944 turbo, it's original and standard with very good history and a solid motor with just 73k miles. Topend rebuilt just 10k miles ago. I'm looking for more HP and eventually would like around 330hp but can't do it all at once. I've picked up loads of suggestions as to how to go but thought I'd try you guys. I was thinking of a dual port wastegate initially but need suggestions as to which one and where to go from there.
Cheers

Hi and welcome from me.
To start Excellent choice of car :blink1:

The guys to get your parts from are Jon Mitchell Garage. Jon is the 944 guru in this country and widely respected in the Porsche community. Look at my thread on the upgrades he's done on mine and have a chat with him http://www.torquecars.com/forums/f29/my-944-upgrades-10053/#post93737 My 944T is the SE 250 version but the parts will go on yours. A chip, DPW, BOV and boost controller should transform your car and get close to 300 horseys as long as the engine is in good condition to start with. Once over the 300 hp then 3" exhaust, larger injectors 3bar fuel regulator and larger fuel pump will be required as the standad one are pretty much maxed out. The injectors on the 944 are not sequential they fire in a big lump so the more power then more fuel is needed to be delivered. You may need to look at a bigger turbo as yours is smaller than mine but it spools up quicker so feels more responsive so you may want to keep as is unless you really want big power. 300hp was what the 944 was supposed to have when developed but then it would of out accelerated the flagship 911T which just wouldn't do so it was purposedly detuned  Anyway it leaves it for us guys to put it right  After 350hp you are then talking BiiiiiiiG money to get to the next level with MAF kits, Turbo's and remapping then all the suspension, brakes etc to handle the power. You can always take the capacity upto 2.8, 3.0 or 3.2ltr also but you're into £20k+ money
Give Jon a phone and say Aerial Andy sent you and he'll come up with a package/budget for you. Any further questions then give us a shout and if you want a trial run in a modded 944 then I'm always happy to give you a go in mine if you can get down my way.

Happy Boooooosting

Andy

Thanks for the welcome guys and for the tips Andy. I plan to do some upgrading over the winter with Gaz shocks and the performance upgades you mention. I was hoping to chip it and fit the wastegate and BOV for under a grand, you think that's possible? Also my car had a topend rebuild 10k miles ago by a good specialist but it was rebuilt with standard parts, you recon that should handle 300 horses?

I've been down the forced induction route before with a supercharged 993 (365 HP) but it just cost way too much and of corse I lost it all when I sold, so I don't want to spend a fortune, just create a fast fun car that aint goin to loose a s**t load of money,

Your engine will be fine handling 300 horses as said it was designed for that power in the first place. I've been in 450hp cars still with standard 2.5 internals and that was a cabriolet aswell:eek:
Looked at those parts on JMG website and they come to that with fitting so if your're doing it yourself then it'll be well under. My parts were from JMG and they are Bailey BOV, Tial DPW and Klauss Hoffman chip. A proper dyno remap would be best but more expensive. A boost controller and boost improver would also be advised.
Give me a shout if you want more info.

Thanks Andy, I was talking to Autograph cars yesterday and he told me the same. He has a 300hp car but running standard waste gate and BOV. What diference will a dual port waste gate and a better BOV make to the performance or drive?

Ok DPW means that it recieves a boost signal to keep it closed, as well as one to open it, therefore loss of boost at higher RPM is avoided, your turbo spools up sooner and your car becomes faster!!!
JMG BOV is matched to their DPW which is a bespoke design to them not a reconditoned one like most companies supply.
The Boost improverimproves boost performance of standard and chipped Porsche 944 Turbo models. Reduces wastegate creep (boost bleeding off), improves wastegate performance by reducing lag and gives performance gains throughout the rpm range.
The Boost controller is as it says you can set the boost level depending on your state of tune, mines set to 18PSI now, some people go as far as 25PSI but the engine may not last long at that level. Warning! If you go above 14PSI level then you need to change the plastic fittings in the boost hoses to brass ones otherwise they just blow apart!
As you can see all these parts work together to bring the boost in sooner and hold for longer and they certainly do work.
