    Olley's E30 project thread.

Near four years off the road. A lot has gone on, but no progress on the car what so ever. It's still sat on the driveway looking sorry for itself. Anyone in or near West London has a workshop for rent that doesn't want a fortune get in touch. I'm itching to get old Ironsides back on the road!

    What's the difference/definition

Okay, between lockdown and general boredom: What is the definition of "stage" tuning. I'm forever hearing/reading people saying "yeah it's stage four, mate!" but I have no idea what it means. If anyone has a definitive answer please let us know, or alternatively just weigh in with your opinion...

I have no idea on the legality of driving in Canada, but here in the UK all information can be looked up easily on the Gov website.

What's the best way to remove a seized on wiper arm ?

Not sure if you're talking about the assembly that's off the car or the wiper is stuck on the car, but if you can safely apply heat without damaging anything else then do so. And I mean lots of heat.

    Olley's E30 project thread.

Standard four stud doesn't give me as many options for big brakes and wheels as the five stud set up does. Just a case of sorting out the geometry now anyway. How's yours coming along?

    Good long suspension read

Doesn't a non newtonian fluid work the other way round? pretty sure custard is one, and that's soft when little force is applied and closer to solid with a high impact?

Fantasy Island Time - What piece of equipment would you really like in your garage?

The progress I've made in the last few years I now need a lathe, mill, ramp, sand blaster, tig welder, tube bender, tube notcher, sheet metal bender, guillotine. Pretty much a fabrication workshop, and engine building room. Of course I still don't actually have a garage!

    Olley's E30 project thread.

Update. Not a lot... Engine is starting to take shape, diffs being rebuilt, plans being made for front suspension upgrades (custom lower arms to correct the geometry from the 5 stud swap) purchase list getting longer and longer, for a change. Got gearboxes to freshen up, and saving up for...

    E30 general discussion/techy stuff

Only three engines worth having from the range, the M42B18, M20B25 (or the 2.7 Alpina) and the S14 or a stroker M20 (custom) the M40 (1.6 and 1.8) are just far too under powered, but can be built to take boost The M20B20 is 1.8 power with 2.5 fuel economy, though with a little fettling can be...

    Strange BMW model designations

Only BMW that deserves an M badge is a true M car. M sports should only have them if they have a "performance package" all the rest are tacky!

Can you recall a favourite drive

Was visiting relatives in Weymouth last year and took a drive to Taunton to see a friend. Some mega roads on that route. May have accidentally overtaken a lorry sideways giving the old touring some stick.

I hope not. I quite like it, but that being said one of the first things I did to mine was take the model badge off the boot lid!

    Strange BMW model designations

Early cars it denoted engine size, later cars it was more relevant to trim level. Don't forget the complicated engine codes too!

    BMW 740i newbie

The M62 is a fairly good engine, now if I'm right, your's will be a late E38, and I presume an auto. I wouldn't try and get too much extra out of the engine if it is an auto as you'll likely kill off the box, BMW auto boxes in my experience with them tend to be the weak link (in the older ones...

Welcome, That the mk2 mondeo? I had a 1.8 about 9 years ago had loads of fun with it. might dig out some pictures but it was a bit of a shed!

Does your car have a name?

Mine is usually called whatever profanity rolls off my tongue at the time I am referring to the damn thing! The (now dead) daily had a couple of names, "the green one", "shed", "beast" (Irony), "the scrapper" but now is called "the deadest one" due to the fact I own three non-runners at present.

Electric could be the way to go for "budget builds" of the future though. Cue youtube link

Can 1000bhp for £1000 be done?

And at present I'm sure the batteries would cost more then the £1k budget anyway.

    206 2.0 tuning tips wanted

If they do a higher power version of the engine look for differences in the intake and exhaust manifolds. Has it got an electronic or mechanical fuel pump? Peugeot Partner loosing power

I'm assuming it's a diesel, Could be the EGR is blocked, could be the turbo is on the way out. The best thing to do would be to do a diagnostic when it is down on power to see if it brings up any codes then. failing that I would suggest looking at common faults with the same or similar symptoms...

Cheers Yeti, Get your own project thread going! Obi_Waynne, the car is at Hard Knocks Speed shop (check them out on facebook/instagram, he does some top notch stuff) awaiting some fabrication work. It should be done in a few weeks. then it's coming back home on a truck/trailer and I'll be...

    Olley's E30 project thread.

I've been trying! slow progress at present, but getting there. In between building and repairing cars for other people I do bits when I can. I'm also trying to get my new daily on the road as well. so barely got time to sneeze at the moment. But it's all moving along slowly.

Right, finally a bit of time to up-date. First off, it was in almost daily use up until the beginning of January when I decided to bite the bullet and get started on some major work. Interior came out, all bar dash and drivers seat (was removed and put back in so carpet could come out) First...

Once again apologies for the long term absence but life gets in the way of life. Updates on the car... Not sure where to start, she's been off the road since the beginning of January and not sure when it'll be done, but the list of work is endless.... I'll get some pictures transferred over...

    Olley's E30 project thread.

Update.... After driving the car for almost a year and getting very annoyed with how poorly it ran when cold I made somewhat of a shocking discovery... It's been running on an ECU for a 2L engine! So, quick swap around with ECU's Chips and a little swearing. It now runs spot on from the get go...

Minimal camber, Droplinks are new and from a ford mondeo estate rear. Didn't think it could be top mounts, will check them out. Definitely not bottoming out, could be topping out though, if that makes sense.

    Coilover query.

I have on the front of my car a set of coil-overs I purchased second hand. I have a knocking noise which is apparent when the suspension goes to droop then loads up again, i.e. hitting a dip in the road or coming off of a bump at speed like a botched road repair on the motorway. They are wound...
