Dual Mass flywheels

Re: Mass flywheels

Done the new thread. (You can start a new thread whenever you want - if you can't then I've set the board up wrong!)

What is a dual mass Flywheel? How do they work and is this a diesel only thing?

No - they're becoming common on petrols as well. Diesel engines do create more vibration than petrols so they tend to benefit more.

I'll have a look around for a good description of one of these -I sort of understand wat they do but can't really explain it very well.

I know what you mean. You get the theory but want to understand the mechanics of it. I'll wait with baited breath!

waynne the a3 should have a DMF i know the bora does ?

from what i understand the flywheel is split in 2 the inside and outside of it are joined by springs. vibrations are lost through the springs.
they are common on most larger saloons and prestige makes are the drivers want a more smoother drive

I never realised that! WOW! I had one all along. So there are 2 flywheels connected by springs, this sounds clever.

PG's done a nice job of that - that's exactly what it does. I think tuned diesels are a DMF's nemesis. There's just too much torque. I'm advised not to replace with a solid f/w as this can cause massive crankshaft torsional stresses.

Got a call today to say that warranty will cover DMF replacement parts and labour. All I've have to fork out is £20 for transmission oil and same again for new driveshaft seals.

So, get a new clutch dropped in at the same time and I think Paul's just acquitted himself quite nicely!!

Once in a while things go my way.

That is pretty lucky. If it was me the clutch would go the week after this work was carried out.

I've been driving the wife's Seat Ibiza, which is a good old fashioned diesel ie. no turbo, no torque, no power etc. And I've grown to quite like it in its friendly, chuggy chattery kind of way.

The rate that fuel prices are going up it'll be a Smart for me next time.

The Peugeot specialist has followed Peugeot's latest and greatest advice which is to retro fit a solid flywheel and a torque damping (normal) clutch to reduce subsequent claims.

I drives fine, but there a little bit of harmonic vibration at full throttle below 2000rpm.

Hopefully this will reduce the risk of further problems - something I like as the warranty expires in July.

my transit has a dual mass flywheel and to my amazement when my starter motor packed in you have to change the mass flywheel aswell as the dust and dirt will break down the new starter £750 later all fixed.what a rediculous idea ford!

Mine's failed and has been replaced with Peugeot's approved solid flywheel replacement. There is now just a touch of diesel 'growl' under acceleration but I'll tolerate that for the reduced breakdown risk.

I think that's a bit harsh. Of recent years Ford has really sorted out the quality control issues. I know that they're a bit prescriptive with some of the diesel engines but in general Fords are now well made and stand up well in normal use. No, perhaps they won't take the battering that you can dish out to Japanese mechanicals but then nor will most German machinery. With the possible exception of Porsche.

why does the solid flywheel create stress in the crank/drive shaft?? i thought the stress would be through the flywheel?

Help -got a problem. Clutch is slipping in gears 3, 4, and 5. Appears that someone's been misled. The Solid Flywheel supposedly a LuK component is in fact not LuK. LuK tell me they don't make aftermarket solid flywheel replacements. So somehow, someone and Euro Car Parts has sold a flywheel and clutch assembly from another model in the range (perhaps a smaller petrol one as they don't use a DMF) which all bolts up together and works. For a while, anyway.

Suggestions please as to how to get it replaced.

If there is a problem with just over a month of usage i would suggest one of the following;
Lack of bedding in procedure, clutches still need a bedding in period of 3 - 500 miles.
Incorrectly adjusted clutch. Sorry, i'm not familiar with this motor so not sure where the adjustment is, at the pedal if it's hydraulic or box end if cable etc.
The clutch itself is not capable of the duress of your engine.
If it was incorrectly fitted, there would most probably have been problems from the begining.
Take it back to where it was fitted and get them to sort it.

Is it the 0-60 power runs that did it;)?

I'd definately take it back. Didn't the garage specify the solid flywheel?

It's been slipping long before those I'm afraid. I'm mroe concerned about drivetrain damage in the long term due to torsional vibrations being transmitted. This could also affect the crankshaft. I've sent a very formal letter to the garage that did the work. Basically I asked for the DMF and clutch to be replaced (with another each of the same). I did NOT asked for the DMF and clutch to be replaced with a Solid Flywheel Conversion kit.

Let's see what transpires. I think my case is sound so if the letter is unforthcoming I'll force it into small claims.

A solicitors letter is usually enough. Have you got legal cover under you home insurance which covers this? (A lot exclude motor vehicle disputes!)

I don't have cover for motor vehicle issues with house contents. I MIGHT just be able to get assistance from Privilege (my motor insurer).

I really don't think tha garage is at fault. I think they acted in good faith and were supplied with incorrect parts by the local motor factor. As such I will support them quite happily, so long as they take steps to resolve the issue. I think that the motor factor should pay for the labour costs - they had no right to substitute parts on the picking room floor.

I won't bother with a solicitor, my grounding in consumer and contractual law is significant enough to conduct this case alone.

At the moment the garage needs to see a definitive fault to have a chance of recovering their labour costs. Let's get it in to them one morning and they can experience the slippy clutch. That should be enough

Did a clutch today on a ford diesel and i have picture of the dual mass flywheel, it had snap the splines off the middle, I will upload some pics asap
