Indicated 158mph at the wheel of a 1990/H Porsche 928 S4 on the A329M between M4 Jct 10 and the A4 east of Reading (past the Winnersh Triangle industrial area). Allow 10% for speedo error then it's 142mph true at very worst.

Dont' recommend it tho, too much is at stake if it really goes wrong.

On a track day we were in a TVR and that was pulling pretty silly speeds around 160 mph. I'm really not comfortable at speed on a road - as HDi fun says there is too much that could go wrong - I've seen cars get a blowout at these speeds and just roll off the road.

Hmmm. Now I feel slow. 130mph on the M1 Southbound in an Audi A3 1.8 Turbo, a company car, on my way to pick up a client from Stanstead Airport, accidentally racing an Escort Cosworth.

No, really, it was accidental. I was overtaking a stream of traffic at 80mph when I drew level with the Cossie at the front, and he decided he wasn't going to make it easy for me. So I speed up, he speeds up, I give it some more, he gives it some more, I look down at my speedo and it's definitely over the 130 mark (although theres plenty left before redline) but at that point I decided it wasn't worth my license and admitted defeat.

Can I just point out that driving at break neck speeds on the publick roads is both irresponsible and stupid! The only place people tend to get to quicker after they have cought up with all the traffic is a hospital or the morgue.

At our local airstrip I got my old 1982 BMW 528i up to 130mph.

Fingers is right girls and boys.

I did this when I was 19, young, crazy and reckless, and in those days I enjoyed the odd spot of street racing too.

A few years later I wrote off my own Polo in a very nasty accident (incidentally only at 35mph) and was extremely lucky to walk away alive, let alone completely unharmed. (Luckily the only things harmed were my Polo and a telegraph pole).

When something goes wrong, it can easily go wrong very badly very quickly, and a car you were in control of a split second before becomes a heavy metal box with no control at all.

Speed is tremendous fun, and there are plenty of run what ya brungs and track days to enjoy it safely.

It's a horrible feeling after having been in a crash where nothing was harmed except your car and your pride, but imagine how much worse it would be if there were passengers in your vehicle or someone got in the way of your flying heavy metal box... Not something you want on your conscience.

Does an aircraft taking off count? They do about 500mph I reckon?

Erm no. The title being a give away on that one Waynne. An aircraft obviously isn't a land vehicle

But if you pulled the wings off a fly it would be a walk - just cos you are in a plane doesn't mean you have to fly - you are still running on land with wheels!

(I'm not really going to win this one am I, so what about a hovercraft? Would that count?)
