Tuning a Lada

So here's the deal...

My uncle is now tuning a Lada 1200 wich I will probably buy from him in the spring. He will have put a 2 litre FIAT engine in the car along with a turbo, clutch(don't remember how you write that ), a air filter, blow off vent and probably something more things I don't remember at the moment. I am wondering if there is much more that can be done at a low cost to raise the number of horses under the bonnet and tune it well for drag racing

the basic list has already been done for you if he completes the list only thing missing which would give you more power at a reasonable cost would be a remap it would give around 30 ponies your way


thought the lada wouldnt have been big enough for you. for some reason thought your first car would have been a big 7000cc 4x4 with at least 30" wheels on for rumbling across the wilderness

I think if he is putting it in a Lada it will be the old twin cam motor from the old (I think) 126 which runs on carburettors. With those Modifications done to the car and on this sort of engine set up, the best next step for you is weight reduction. If you don't need it, get rid of it.

The Lada is just the starting car...Something to use just to get from point A to point B that isn't to expencive so I can buy a nice jeep. But 30"...That is kind of small, at least here, if you want to raise up a car here in Iceland in my opinion and most of my friends it isn't worth it for less than 38", maby 35" for a Grand Vitara or a Niva but not smaller...

I am saving up for a good Land Rover or an Econoline on around 44-48" tires.

Got to have something for the track that stands more out than with the big tires.

But what about a racing chip...is that wery difficult to install that and how much can it give me. Not shure from what kind of a Fiat engine it is, all I know is that it is a 2 Litre The Fiat is delivering around 120 horses now and I am hoaping after the Modifications it will give maby 150-180, Then I would Want to get it up to maby 200hp.

The weight reduction could maby be a good step but for now as this will be my only car...I don't want to strip it out too much.

How much could chip tuning give me?

if its an old carb engine theres a high chance it wont have an ECU and therefore you couldnt chip it, if its a newer engine then it will have and ECU on then you can get it chipped (remapped if its a really new engine think its 2002 that all cars had to have a diagnosic port) and on a turboed engine your looking at around 25-40 ponies on a NASP engine about 5-10 for a 2 ltr

Yeah so it will probably don't be possible. I think the engine is from a car made between 1985 and 1990.

It's likely to be the 2 litre four cylinder unit which powered the Fiat Croma during the '85-'90 era. It's a good unit, with a twin-cam eight valve head (unusual now, most fours now have 16 valves).

I'm pretty certain that Lancia used the same motor in the Delta Integrale rally car with a sixteen valve head and a pair of Garrett T3 turbochargers. These could shove out 200 bhp with ease.

The injection system would be the Bosch K-Jetronic system, which was the first mass market EFi system produced that worked reliably. Earlier cars still used Weber carbs, but a pair of DCOE's makes a wonderful noise as well as throttle response so fast it almost anticipated your foot going down. They are very very tuneable, although it's a specialist market.

The Bosch K system is not tuneable unless you resort to high flow injectors etc. You'll also need to make sure the fuel pump can deliver enough to stop lean running as this will cause excessive heat in the combustion chambers with risk of burning valve seats (esp. exhaust).

This sounds like a truly fun project.

I'm maby even thinking about taking it to a little rally tour next summer up to a place called Laugafell wich is a place near Vatnajökull, the biggest glacier in Europe, I think the only glaciers bigger than Vatnajökull in the world are the poles and the glacier that covers Greenland
