i saw at a french forum about repair man breaking 2 "candles" in a 98 E300TD
they talk about not having heating the engine before taking the off

We are talking spark plugs then! I've not had trouble removing them from a hot engine but I suppose it is more sensible to remove and fit them when the engine is cold as metal expands when it heats up and you will get a tighter fit that way.

Also - Diesel and Petrol plugs are very diffent - the glow plugs in a diesel cannot be compared with the spark plugs in a petrol engine.
