| Re: question just for fun Bloody hell. That's a question and a half!
Lot's of time is spent on the sound the doors make when they close. Whether or not that's over-engineering is debateable.
Porsche spent dozens of hours tuning the sound of the exhausts on the Boxsters.
In my opinion, Nissan over engineered some aspects of the p11 primera. I owned one of those. Nissan did some silly things in testing. Like freezing the whole car to minus 40 degress celcius, then starting the engine (presumably having broken in through the iced doors!) and IMMEDIATELY running at full load and revs (7300rpm) for several hours to see what breaks. That in itself is not over-engineering. But, re-designing the bits that did break and then starting over again until it all worked probably is over engineering.
SR20's are very strong engines.
Nissan also did silly things like creating a modest vacuum inside the car and spraying water with a lance at all the vulnerable leak points. Fix the seals and try again. Bit OTT, but you try and find a Primera with a wet carpet!! |

| Re: question just for fun I would say the engine as it is capable of handling much more power than it actually puts out.

| Re: question just for fun Let's have a definition of "over engineered" then. Its a pretty fine line if you ask me.

| Re: question just for fun Over specified is where you have 24 zone climate control. Whether or not it works properly is irrelevant, but it's still over specified.
Over engineered is where you take a component that should reasonably last for 10 years or 250,000 miles and then redesign it until it can last 3 millenia.
