Default Noisy tyres

Would you say that you get much road noise from your tyres? Do you notice much of a difference when you buy new ones?

On my winter tires yes. The "nails" make a loud kind of a humm when there is no snow or smooth Ice

Hansi is talking of studded tyres. These are, literally, tyres whose tread road contact surface is embedded with steel studs that dig into the ice to allow loads of extra grip on frozen roads. They are noisy. And generally you cannot drive over about 60mph at all, more often 50mph is the recommended maximum speed.

In the UK we don't adopt the practice of changing to winter tyres in the winter months.

Tyres can be noisy. I used to fit Goodyear Venturas to my Nissan. They were loud when driven over coarse surfaces (A34 has a lot of concrete, M40 used to) M20 and M2 were horrendous.

The 406 is a lot more distant in terms of tyre noise but the Viking badged Contis I have at the moment are a lot louder than the Continental Premium 2s I had previously.

That might well be a valid point. These diesel things are horrible. Why anyone would drive one? The noise is horrific, the vibration is helpful in reminding you
that you managed to get it over 30mph. As such, I want a VC awarded with immediate effect.

I get road noise at times, but it is more dependant upon road surface quality. Since changing to Toyo T1Rs I get very little now.

Road surface plays a big part. Jaguar has always managed the magic carpet effect of superb handling and quiet and comfortable ride.

The oleo-pneumatic Citroens were good at this trick as well - go drive a current model C5 or C6 and see what I mean.

You can drive them above 60 mph easilly and you won't have problems. The steel studs are only about a millimeter out of the tire and do not make it harder to drive in any conditions. The studs burry them selves into the Ice and make it harder for the car to go sideways and give it better traction. You really don't feel them to much when you're driving
