Not a lot can be done with small petrol engines, but do consider using the best fuel you can get - BP Ultimate and Shell Optimax are bot good, I used to use them in a 2.0 litre Nissan Primera and the response is noticeable.
Also, keep it serviced, use good quality synthetic engine oils. That way you can use the revs (modern small cc petrols love revs) to make up for the lack of low/mid torque.
I still enjoy the odd blast in a small courtesy car when my (big and very torquey) diesel is in for a service. They have an immediacy about them that doesn't happen with larger vehicles and larger engines.
Power ain't everything.
