Default My Car Is Dying :(

Hey all sorry for long time offline i was moving house. I have had so many issues of recent with my Fiat i think it is on its way out.

The Gear Box is leaking oil.
My MPG has dropped from 40 mpg to 30.2
When I am in either 4th or 5th every so often if i accelerate the engine revs to something silly like 5,000 rpm but none of the power is giving me speed for e.g. acting if it is in neutral.

Think I need to consider scrapping the motor soon if troubles carry on!

Your clutch is slipping. It's a couple of hundred to replace if it's just the plates, about twice that if it's the flywheel too. Gearbox losing oil is probably drive shaft seals. Dunno how much they'd be to change.

I wouldn't chuck it away immediately. Whether it costs you more than you paid for it is not really the issue.

It's whether you can replace the car with a better one for the money a clutch and a set of driveshaft seals will cost.

Bear in mind that the next car might have issues as well so if yours is basically sound and you like it I'd be inclined to repair it.

The oil seals are probably the ones inside the transaxle where the CV joints attach so the work is external. It could be, however that the oil is leaking internally into the clutch thus causing it to slip.

That's true I'd not thought of that, it could just be that your clutch is contaminated with oil.

If it is just contamination you're going to have to get the clutch dismantled for a cleanup so you might as well stick a new one in anyway for the cost of the parts. I doubt a clutch kit will even cost £100 for your car.

It should be pretty straightforward then. I'd still consider a new clutch kit though, unless the existing one is only marginally worn. Let's be fair it's a lightweight car and it's not bursting with a torque mountain so the chance of the clutch being excessively worn is unlikely. Spend the money you'll save of Xmas treats of the food and drink variety.

Happy holidays.
