What's the penalty if you are caught and charged?

I'd imagine that it's pretty unpleasant, probably a short period of incarceration during which there'll be a couple of short but extremely painful sessions of physical punishment.

As such, I'd steer well clear of anything that's even remotely likely to attract the attention of the authorities.

Well on road, if we're caught by the Police, we're charged about B$50.
As far as i know during a Road block session, sometimes the Police are with Ministry of Transportation, thats when it get hasty, they might charged us with higher pay depending with the modification, i dont know how much but its expensive. Paying up the court, etc.

Not as bad as I imagined, thanksfully. Still, there's a lot of legislation to comply with here in the UK too when it comes to modifying cars. Not quite as draconian as what you're describing but The Road Traffic Act and Construction and Use Regulations are a bit of a minefield.

I'm sure it will get tighter. I'm just glad the CO2 tax bands don't apply before 2001 otherwise my annual tax bill will be getting a massive hike over the next few years.

I'm post 2001 and still taxed on factory emissions ratings. Driving style is far more likely to affect CO2 than any Modifications to the car itself.

I can see the sense in outlawing ALL modifications because it removes the risk of badly done work by unqualified operators. On the contrary - there are plenty of standard cars here in the UK that are terribly maintained as a result of ignorant and neglegent owners.

It's hard to see a sensible route foward

yeap youd be jumping from £210 to £300 like me .

i think the talk of the new mot rules were only on new cars. 1st one after 4 years and then every 2 years

as most people dont look after their cars. i really dont like this idea some cars are just ok on the roads so think what another year of neglect would do to them or more importantly how more dangerous they may become

Agreed. MOT every year as we do now.

Perhaps a little more Police attention to tyres and other obvious vehicle components and little less mucking about with LiDAR and other roadside enforcement devices.

WHile we're at it - get rid of the local authority operated speed traps as well. All they do is give proper traffic police a bad name.
