Which means, he be tempted to go fast because of the high mpg he would get, rather than the other way around. But the cars top end, 140mph does bring back 25 mpg if hes lucky. Its a pretty wierd car...

dont trust the reading mines is the same i can cruise through towns doing 30 and only get mid late 30's (1700 rpm 4th gear) but i can go down the mway at 80 (3500rpm 6th) and return mid 40's even as high as 50mpg as long as the roads flat

Yeah the active reading isnt accurate in the long run - but the average one is best.

3500rpm in the Pug in fifth (no sixth) is 116 mph. Typical diesel but it still pulls very hard at that speed.

As for economy, well, 116 mph is not the formula for saving fuel.

If I get the car running before the end of the drag racing season, I will have spent thousands.

However, in order to to reduce costs (my reasoning to the wife) I am buying a lathe and milling machine. This will allow me to make all those small odds and ends that end up costing £50-100+ each at the local machine shop. Shouldn't take long (hopefully) to re-coup cost of machines - and it will be fun
