Default exhaust 'kuu' in vags

im sure most people have heard a gttdi golf or bora cruzing throught the town, the thing i want to know is when they rev up til about 1800-2000 rpm and change gear, theres a unmistakable 'kuu' sound from the exhaust. what is causing this noise and is it doing an harm? i make ss exhausts and a number of people want it but al im told to do is go straight line no boxes and hope for the best. only some vags do it and unfortunatily no pugs do it at all!!!!

A mate of mine has one with that engine so I'll investigate for you and see what it is. It sounds like it could be the exhaust wastegate diverter is just cutting in.
