Default Engine Tapping

When I bought my car there was a unusual sound from the engine, it didn't sound bad but it was different. I just assumed that maybe I was used to the 1.2 petrol engine sound and then that was just the 2.0 turbo sound. The seller assured me that it was normal and the air-filter does make it sound a lot different.

Most people tell me its fine and agree that its the air filter but my brother (who knows a little bit about cars but not a huge lot so I'm not sure if hes right) tells me the engine is tapping and the sound does actually sound like someone is tapping a door, lol.

Could this be the air-filter?

If its tapping, what is tapping (from an engine point of view), it is expensive to get fixed?

Thanks in advance guys,

Pix.

irregular tapping noises are not normal. Loud ones mean that camshafts and or small end bearings are on their way out.

Try using an oil additive (Forte's Top End treatment, for example) - it's very likely that you have sticky hydraulic tappets. If this solves the problem then have oil and filter changed ASAP. If it doesn't then you may need to consult a specialist.
