Ebay scams

I want to buy some mats from ebay but Ive heard a lot about scams and am pretty worried about the whole thing. How can I protect myself as a buyer or even as seller for that matter? What scams should I avoid? What protection is there through ebay if the guy ran off with my money?

paypal has buyer protection for up to £500 and only buy from sellers with high feedback preferable a shop as well.
