| Re: What's the appeal of diesel? 328lbft but I can't match the 48mpg I'm afraid but the economy strangely is better than the same car in standard tune.
I'm absolutely certain that the fuel usage has nothing whatsoever to do with my driving style |

Loads of people say that mpg is up after a remap. Mine is a little.
Dunno why everyone doesnt do it, as long as you are sensible there shouldnt be any problems.
I'd imagine your car shifts a lot quicker than someone might expect a Pug 406 to shift! |

| Re: What's the appeal of diesel? It does, the bhp is over 190. Not enormous but, the mid range torque is shattering. 30-60mph, 3rd gear in four seconds, for example.
It is fun. Especially as the car is totally standard in all other respects.
THe only thing I'd advise of everyone is to let the thing cool at idle for a minute or two before switching off when the engine is hot. |

| Re: What's the appeal of diesel? For me it's largely because everyone else has got a petrol and mods it up. I want to be different and do it the hard way.
The fact that insurance is cheaper on a diesel and you can get bigger benefits from a remap is by the by. |

| Re: What's the appeal of diesel? That's odd because a Mondeo 1.8 TD certainly doesn't qualify as a performance car at all. I can only imagine that the (rather distorted) image projected by the 620Ti is doing you a massive favour here. Don't knock it!!! |

| Re: What's the appeal of diesel? Again - it's possibly the old man image they project. I had a P11 for eight years and that was always dirt cheap to cover fro much the same reason.
It's a strange one because the P11s are very lively and have stunning handling and cornering grip. Nothing like the image thus presented |

| Re: What's the appeal of diesel? You can say that again. I used to hurl mine across the A57 in the Peak District, taking bends at eye watering speeds. That front multi link setup is magical - the wheels just remain vertical whatever the body is doing. |

| Re: What's the appeal of diesel? Did you ever try the turbo-diesel one? It was crap.
The press hammered on about the way a 'drive-by-wire' accelerator had livened it up enormously. I only hope they were right as I really sympathise with anyone stuck with either it or the traditional cable accelerator models.
Painfully slow and so obviously diesel with the noise they made.
Not a car for me, at all.
It presented everything bad about diesels of the old school, perhaps the suggested 49mpg would have helped. Frankly, I'd couldn't care less, crap engine that spoilt an otherwise very nice car. |

| Re: What's the appeal of diesel? Appeal of a diesel?
The fact that 125 quid got me an instant +40bhp, to 170, and 290lbs ft of torque. |

| Re: What's the appeal of diesel? I have to say that I converted to diesel after having an X Type V6, nice car , nice engine but when my fuel bill topped £450 one month I had to make the change, luckilly my wife has a new shape Civic Type S so I can still have a bit of fun but at her expense!! |

| Re: What's the appeal of diesel? Diesel cars can be great fun of you get a quick one and then tune it further. The one thing they don't do any longer is run for weeks on seemingly no fuel at all. |

| Re: What's the appeal of diesel? HDi fun, I totally agree with your points about how a diesel feels like a high power petrol, but unfortunatly only for the 1-5k portion! That's definitely where the apeal is. It does make it harder to get the most out of it though because of how much you need to work the gearbox. I for one found it pretty tricky getting gear changes perfect for a 1/4 mile run I did. More practice to be had, but a diesel really isnt suited to drag racing unles it's very highly tuned. Day to day driving a diesel makes a superb ride, with enough performance to shock a few faster petrols |

You do have to be in the right gear, and the rev range for shove is narrow, but within it it is quick.
I don't drag race mine so it's really not an issue.
Diesels need a lot more gears to win races. VAG has managed this. But then, 1000bhp might have helped this along a bit. |

| Re: What's the appeal of diesel? There was an article in EVO about the Audi R10. Very interesting read. They went for a 5 speed box over a 6 speed but used longer ratios. I often think that my 6 speed could do with a longer 1st and 2nd that's for sure. Certainly now there's more power but I guess that would put huge strains on the drive train. |
