Most local colleges offer course in mechanics and engineering - the 2 are useful skill sets to learn. It might be worth starting off with a car maintanance course in the evenings and then dive right in.

Hey, i was looking for some info about Automotive related Diplomas, and found on the City&Guild Website a really cool game.
Check this out: http://www.cityandguilds.com/lovecars/loader.swf.
You can also win a Wii and tickets to the Motor Show.
Hope you will appreciate my tip!
Cheers,

Lester
