| HI I need some help :) Hi I am 16 years old and from the UK I am looking for my first car and I have £2000 to spend maybe £2300 if Im nice to my parents, I was thinking maybe something like a 1.0l VW polo or a 1.3 escort. I am looking for something cheap to insure because money is tight.
Any suggestions?
Thanks for the help,
Bourney. |

| Re: HI I need some help :) Get whatever you like most within your budget. some suggestions from me would be:
Mk4 Polo
Mk1 Punto Sporting
Saxo Furio
106 Quicksilver
Assuming you have £2300 just to spend on the car and extra for insurance that is.

| Re: HI I need some help :) Hmmmm I like the sound of all of those cars, basically im getting a car bought for me and then i have to pay insurance. Ive seen a lot of the older punto's but they have been a bit over the top in terms of upgrades so i think ill try and get a sporting model and bump up the horses a bit. Thanks |

| Re: HI I need some help :) welcome to the site Bourney
unfortunately cheap insurance isnt really an option for you on any car!
so me personally i would be looking to get a £500 - £1000 car something that has quite a few cheap upgrade parts. something like a corsa, punto, astra, 106/saxo all cheap to buy, all have low engines, but all are reasonably easy to work on and there is pretty much a guide on the internet for all of them for doing any of the upgrades you plan on doing
but i will throw a wild card in here my mrs had a 99 micra 1.3sr and ill be honest here it was nippy and fun to throw around the corners! i know you probably wont like them but something else to consider

| Re: HI I need some help :) The Sportings are a very good car. Feels very lively for an 85bhp (1.2 16v) car due to its short-ratio 6-speed box. Quicker than most of its competition in a straight line (1.4 Paxos, 106s etc), decently specced and tidy ones can be picked up for pennies these days. |

| Re: HI I need some help :) Thanks for the support guys and to herb i basically learned to drive in my mums nissan micra lol they are ok but id rather something a little more sporty and in terms of cars my dad said that i could leave getting a car and he will pay for me to be insured on his fiat stilo abarth (2.4L 170 hp) I like the sound of that but do you guys think it will be worth sacrificing my independence to drive a faster car ? hmmm so many options :/ |

| Re: HI I need some help :) I hope you realise you're very lucky chief I'll say that much I had to pay for everything myself If you share cars it will always be a pain when both of you want to use it at the same time, and has the potential for arguments.
Hang on...how did you learn to drive in your mums Micra at 16? |

| Re: HI I need some help :) Yeah my brother had to pay for everything himself as well, i am very very lucky and as soon as my dad learned to drive ( in 2005 ) he took me an industrial estate in his nicely modified ford escort... until i craned it.. but yeah my mum doesn't really drive much and isn't bothered about her car getting wrecked(because its a banger ) and she has been taking me to the industrial estate for a few years now and Ive got the hang of it .

Hang on...how did you learn to drive in your mums Micra at 16? | not just usage of the car cause when you start driving you always want to put your own stamp on the vehicle. certain things that your old man may not really like. e.g. a boot full of subs and amps, bigger/nicer alloys, big bore back box etc
also good point ma! |

| Re: HI I need some help :) Ah fair enough but driving around an industrial estate is very different to driving on the roads, with real traffic and road signs, big islands etc etc etc. Not going on or anything just trying to help, just stating the obvious really aren't I
Planning to have a few lessons with an instructor before your test? The hard part imo is not driving itself, but driving how the examiners want you to drive! I bet most of us couldn't pass our tests driving how we do now. I know I couldn't. |

| Re: HI I need some help :) Hello and welcome to the TorqueCars forums, nice to meet you. Sorry I'm a bit late replying, been tied up with a few things. Were a pretty friendly lot on here and only to happy to swap ideas and tips.
An escort would be too heavy for a 1.3 engine. Try a Nova 1.3 for some serious retro fun. I guess you should look at the 106, saxo and don't dismiss the Diesel options, as these can be cheap to insure.
