to be honest mate no such thing as performance glow plugs

they are only used when the engine is cold, after that the diesel is combuisting due to the compression

and welcome to the site mate

No worries. Don't waste your money paying over the odds for glow plugs, they are used to warm a diesel's cylinders for cold starts, they have nothing to do with performance as once the engine starts to get warm they are no longer used. Posh plugs heat quicker so help the engine get warm quicker but don't add power.

do they do anything then apart from heating the engine quicker? eg. reduce emissions or such a thing

They might reduce emissions indirectly, as the engine warms up quicker, but I doubt it's much difference.

If you want performance change the air intake and exhaust. Can the mk3 be remapped? Even if not a bigger intercooler would give you more power.

on more modern engines they can be used to raise the combustion temp to help clear particle filters but thats it.

Aye, a decent remap and regular servicing is all you need for a diesel really.
