Re: I have never been so insulted In my life The vibration is virtually eliminated now with balancer shafts, hydraulic engine mounts, dual mass flywheels etc. These work well but do add to the cost of engine manufacture.
Sound, well - mine's virtually inaudible. That's inside the car!. Outside there's still the tell tale diesel sound but it's well muted. The biggest noise outside is the rush of the turbos sucking air in and forcing it into the cylinders, which can be quite impressive as you surge past five vehicles uphill in fourth gear. Still not pleasing in the way the hysterical buzz of a Japanese quad cam V6 petrol engine is.
Performance is very strong. My remapped 2.2 will happily out-pull three litre petrols in gears 3,4,5 (6 too, if there is one).
Economy - good. But Rising diesel prices still slightly over petrol and more frequent servicing closes the cost difference somewhat.
I'm seriously considering a large capacity petrol next time round as the servicing is so much simpler and therefore cheaper which I think will probably save me some money.
Having said that, I've never worked it out formally. |
