Blueprinting is a term for producing an engine to nearly zero tolerance. Bearing surfaces are truly round, for example.

Mass produced engines and gearboxes have allowed errors in dimensions in order to keep costs to a sensible minimum.

For example, a Nissan SR20DE petrol unit is said to deliver 150bhp from the factory. A blueprint build of the same engine can be tuned to deliver over 190bhp (as it is in SR20ZE design, Japan only) as a result of the very tight manufacturing tolerances.

It's all about physics, reciprocating masses of metal are what engines are all about. Better balance means more power and torque and higher rev limits.
