I do rate the 1.8T engines - I have one in my A3 and they are very easily tunable so the A4 is a tempting option.

Adressing the need for a better response - fitting a Fuel pressure boost valve will make things more snappy for you. It would also be worth getting some Power Boost Spray (by ekotec) and using this in the air intake to clean the inside of the engine - it should effectively take about 50k miles off the car. Still think a cam is worth considering along with head work but if you are thinking of getting another car this is probably the better option.

Have you considered weight reduction? The car is very heavy - take out the spare tyre and as much junk as you can and see how it responds, then think about a carbon fibre bonnet etc...
