I think I've got this right, I'm sure Lutonmatt will be able confirm this for me.

The sunstrip should not encroach into zone 'A' by anymore than 10mm. Zone 'A' is the swept the area immediately in front of the driver, ie, your wipers should not over lap the strip by any more than 10mm.
An opaque sunstrip is more likely to fail an MOT (& attract the attention of the plod) as it obscures the drivers view.

Another option is to source a windscreen manufactured with a 'built in' sun strip, which is the route I took.
